Why Tutor?

The Little Griffins Tutoring program was started at Bennion Elementary School in Salt Lake City, UT. Bennion is a title 1 school that has a student population of about 400. Within this population there are 23 languages represented. It has come to the attention of the faculty and school district, that the standardized tests scores of the students at Bennion below average and in dire need of improvement. There are several explanations for this including, the language barrier, lack of familial support, and lack of technology available for their use.

The Westminster Scholars recognized a need for a new approach to tutoring in mathematics and reading. Therefore, we began The Little Griffins Tutoring Program. This program integrates hands-on learning, individual student-tutor interaction, and technology enhanced learning tools into one program. We have also implemented a rewards system as incentive for good behavior and desire for further progression.

We feel that our most important job is to be mentors to these young students, hopefully increasing their chances of future success and personal confidence. The Westminster Tutors have an opportunity to enrich the lives of underprivileged students in the community through academic tutoring and personal mentoring. Students at the elementary school level are easily discouraged when struggling with a new concept; now imagine trying to learn it for the first time in a foreign language. It is essential that we work to build self-confidence at the elementary school level before it is too late. As tutors it is our duty to become caring role models for these children.

The Little Griffins need YOU. Please join us in our efforts to teach this generation the skills they need to fulfill their dreams.
